Toulouse school of the XVIth century Project of an Occitan b - Lot 4
Toulouse school of the XVIth century Project of an Occitan bell tower with five levels on a square base Pen and brown ink on black pencil strokes 72,5 x 27 cm Various annotations on the sheet from bottom to top: "from the pavement to the glerie (gallery) bassse there are nine canes of haulteur / from the pavement of the gallery to the first (drip) above the first wye there are three canes / the second wye has height ung pam / the last wye above which is the third wye of hault ung pam Doubled, This original drawing from the Occitan school is preparatory to the construction of a bell tower designed to rise to a height of 32 meters, not counting the spire. In view of the architectural details, characteristic of Saint-Sernin and the Toulouse region, we can date this drawing from the years 1530-1540. Probably intended for a large religious building, this Renaissance bell tower could be part of structural elements of Gothic spirit. Our drawing is an architect's drawing that accompanied a "lease à besogne" passed in front of a notary. The inscriptions on the drawing are indications of measurements, the "pam" and "canes" being the units of measurement at the time in Toulouse. We warmly thank Mr. Pascal Julien, professor of art history at the University of Toulouse, for providing us with all this precious information.
