DESCAVES (Lucien), French writer (1861–1949). Set of 3 signed autograph manuscripts. All in in-4 format. The first manuscript, titled “A National Scourge,” addresses tuberculosis and alcoholism in France, as well as the French government’s failure to curb these scourges. Descaves demonstrates the extent to which France ignores these diseases by allowing hospitals to operate under appalling sanitary conditions. The second manuscript, 6 pp., in-4, titled *< Autour d'Ariane », concerne ce lieu << Ariane », une maison de corrections pour jeunes enfants. Cette institution est accusée de commettre de nombreux abus et d'horreurs sur les enfants. Descaves retranscrit un échange entre le ministre Poussin de Vergettes et lui-même au sujet de cette maison. Le troisième manuscrit, de 6 pp. in-4, intitulé « Les gens de théâtre >* (*The World of the Extra*), is an interesting study of theater extras. Descaves takes us behind the scenes with the extras—those who are paid and those who are not—exploring the hierarchy and the concerns of all the extras.
