CHINA, YUAN dynasty (1279-1368), 14th century. Large porcelain BOWL with slightly flared lip, decorated in blue underglaze with a pair of Mandarin ducks swimming in a lotus pond, the inner rim decorated with a frieze of black lily scrolls, the exterior decorated with a frieze of lotuses surmounting lotus panels. (Ground lip, chip, crack, scratches) Diam. 29.5 cm Provenance: French private collection. Reference: A bowl with similar decoration and another of similar form, both in the Topkapi Palace Museum and reproduced in T. Misugi, Chinese porcelain Collections in the Near East, volume II,1981, p.60 and 61, T.11 and T.12 This large bowl is typical of the early cobalt-blue-decorated porcelain made by the Mongol Yuan Empire in the Jingdezhen kilns. These porcelains, with their wide shapes and rich decoration, were particularly appreciated by Middle Eastern customers, to whom they were exported. The auspicious decoration of a pair of Mandarin ducks in lotuses illustrates the wish for a happy marriage (yuanyang xihe).
