[André LHOTE] Copious and very interesting file concerning l - Lot 38
[André LHOTE] Copious and very interesting file concerning loans of works for a major retrospective of paintings by André Lhote, organized by the Musée National d'Art Moderne in Paris, from October 29 to December 20, 1958. Wishing to obtain the loan of paintings, the curator Bernard Dorival, [signed typed letter, July 8, 1958], approached Mrs. Alfred and Emile Vogel, father and son living in Switzerland, owners of several works by the painter, asking them to agree to lend some paintings for this exhibition, including Gypsy's Bar (1918), Portrait au chapeau de paille (1916), Vacances (1918), La Brodeuse (1913) and Nu Baroque . This was followed by an extensive exchange between the two men (copies of the letters are preserved) concerning the organization and success of this exhibition. Insurance, transport and other arrangements were discussed. In the course of the negotiations, however, there was a slight disagreement between Dorival and the Vogels [2 typed letters signed October 24 and November 10, 1958], and it seems that the valuation of the paintings did not meet with unanimous approval. On July 9, 1958, [typed letter signed], Dorival also wrote to Mlle Marie-Louise Merenda to ask for the loan of her painting Mélancolie, informing her of Lhote's wish to see it included in the exhibition. Unable to attend the opening, she asked Vogel about Lhote's reaction to seeing his work again. Enclosed is a permanent entry for the André Lhote exhibition, in the name of Alfred Vogel. Attached is an exchange of several letters between Marie-Louise Merenda and Alfred Vogel concerning André Lhote and this exhibition.
