Paris, 2 May 1820. 2 p. gd. in-4. Long letter of renunciation for the subscription of the Monument National, letter in which he gives at length and precisely the reasons. He considers in particular, "that a statesman should not be judged during his life and that any monument raised during the life of the powerful ones, or of those which aim at becoming it is too suspect of flattery so that a really man, can contribute to it...".[The National Monument was under this title, constituted of portraits drawn and engraved by Ambroise Tardieu, portraits of deputies, writers and Constitutional Peers, "invariable defenders of the Charter and the Law of the elections of February 5, 1817, destroyed after immortal debates"]. He reminds her of his great kindness in the past concerning the ten or so of his portraits that Tardieu had offered him. "I have exhausted them, here is Doctor Louis, a skilled botanist and whom I had a lot of pleasure to see, who asks me for one...". Elegant letter of renunciation to the project of Tardieu, for the "Monument National", of which he finds "the engravings very beautiful", but not being able to contribute "to this beautiful work by my subscription...". The blank subscription form is attached. BRUN DE VILLERET (Louis Bertrand Pierre) general of the Revolution and the Empire (1773-1845) Letter signed. 1 p. in-4. Beautiful letter in which he asks her to reserve for him the portraits of many personalities, personalities that he quotes, and "to join 13 copies of my own portrait".
