BYZANCE - CONSTANTIN X DUCAS 1059-1067 Christ Pantocrator* s - Lot 30
BYZANCE - CONSTANTIN X DUCAS 1059-1067 Christ Pantocrator* seated, front. R/. Constantine standing frontally, holding a cruciger globe. He is crowned by the Virgin "Theotokos". DOC 2; SB 1848. Histamenon Nomisma or gold penny struck in Constantinople circa 1065-1067. (4.38 g) Very nice. The Christ Pantocrator is a Christ in glory, that is, the artistic representation of Jesus Christ in his glorious body as opposed to the more human representations of Christ suffering the Passion on the Cross, or that of the Child Jesus. Theotokos[ is a title of Mary, mother of Jesus, used especially in Eastern Christianity. The usual Latin translations are Dei Genitrix or Deipara (roughly "parent (female) of God"). The familiar English translations are "Mother of God" or "God-bearer" - but these two have different literal equivalents in Greek, ????? ???? and ???????? ("Who gave birth to the one who was God", "Whose child was God", respectively). The title has been in use since the 3rd century, in the Syriac tradition in the liturgy of Mari and Addai (3rd century) and the liturgy of St. James (4th century). The Council of Ephesus in 431 decreed that Mary is the Theotokos because her Son Jesus is both God and man: a divine person with two natures (divine and human) intimately and hypostatically united
