Rare electrostatic MACHINE by RAMSDEN.Ramsden, English optic - Lot 232
Rare electrostatic MACHINE by RAMSDEN.Ramsden, English optician, built in 1766 this electric machine with glass plate allowing to obtain an electric discharge. XIXth. by friction. Between two vertical wooden uprights supporting leather cushions, a circular plate of brown smoked glass, fixed by its center to an axis, turns with a crank. This plate passes between two brass tubes in the shape of a horseshoe, armed with blades. These are fixed on two large horizontal brass tubes, the conductors, insulated by glass feet. The whole is supported by a wooden base, with four feet. Allowing to obtain electricity with continuous jets, the machines with plates, of which we present here a rare example of the time, quickly supplanted the other types of generators, from 1770. 165 x 145 x 95 cm. Diameter of the plate: 90 cm.
