QUEUX DE ST HILAIRE (Auguste-Henry-Edouard,... - Lot 34 - Goxe - Belaisch - Hôtel des ventes d'Enghien
QUEUX DE ST HILAIRE (Auguste-Henry-Edouard, marquis de) French neo-hellenist. He was also a medievalist, and a fervent music lover. Work coming from the Marquis' library, whose origin would be family bound in the XVIIIth century. Bound in rained calf, fleurons on the boards, 3 gilt fillets, smooth spine weakened, black morocco title-piece. Ex-libris of his coat of arms (monochrome engraved vignette). Shield with three boar's hairs, in a cartouche, resting on a lintel and stamped with a marquis's crown, with supports of a leoparded lion and a unicorn, head contourned, scroll for the motto, legend below) in-8. Spine titled "Recueil de pièces". This volume containing 168 pages, is mainly composed of copies of texts or letters of literary personalities, among which some letters of Voltaire, of the king of Prussia, texts of Boufflers, of President Hénault etc. On the other hand, at the end of the volume, there are 16 autograph pages in the hand of Julie de Lespinasse (numbered 149 to 165) followed by 3 autograph pages of d'Alembert (numbered 166, 167 and 168), which could be an element of dating, considering that these texts written one after the other could be situated in the period when d'Alembert, who was ill, was very close to Julie. A note written in pencil on the second page specifies that it comes from the library of Léo Claretie, probably acquired in the sale of January 5, 1891.
