Agence de SOUFFLOT Project for Sainte Geneviève... - Lot 8 - Goxe - Belaisch - Hôtel des ventes d'Enghien
Agence de SOUFFLOT Project for Sainte Geneviève with the bell towers, circa 1764/69 Pen and black ink, grey wash. 32 x 44.5 cm, (35.5 x 28.5 cm subject size). The architectural subject is trimmed out and then glued in full Restored tears, traces of folds and some epiderminations. Absent from Soufflot's early projects, the bell towers were added by Soufflot from 1764 onwards, no doubt under pressure from a Catholic party who found his project too pagan. Built in the late 1770s, the bell towers were destroyed during the Revolution. When the ashes were transferred from Mirabeau in 1791, it was realized that they were too reminiscent of the original church use of what had just become the Pantheon.
