[DAGUERREOTYPE - EGYPT]. The Colossians of... - Lot 7 - Goxe - Belaisch - Hôtel des ventes d'Enghien
[DAGUERREOTYPE - EGYPT]. The Colossians of Memnon (Memnoniun), Thebes, Egypt, circa 1850. Daguerreotype _ ovalized plate. 11.3 x 15.3 cm. Presented in a modern mat and coaster in 16.6 x 20.8 cm format. On the back, the original laid paper has been preserved with a period handwritten mention of the colossus. There is a collector's stamp on the back in the lower right-hand corner. The presence of a man sitting at the foot of the colossus on the left indicates the scale ratio. Enclosed is an engraving by Carl Streller depicting the Colossians of Memnon. Note: Joseph Philibert Girault de Prangey probably made the largest number of known daguerreotypes in Egypt. The one we present, by an anonymous photographer, is unknown to this day.
